Christmas Reading Challenge

I have handed out a Christmas Reading Challenge for students to complete over the holidays.  Hopefully they will find fun ways to read over the break.  I challenge each student to fill their "mug" with 10 marshmallows.  Each marshmallow is worth 20 minutes of reading.  The Christmas Reading Challenge is due Thursday January 12th.  Those that complete the challenge will be rewarded with Hot Chocolate and Timbits on Friday January 13th.  Enjoy getting cozy and snuggling up with a good book and a cup of hot chocolate!
For those that didn't get an early copy yesterday and missed out today, I have one for them when we return in the new year.  Here is a picture so you have a good idea of what we are doing.

Merry Christmas!
Love, Miss Beardsley

Survey

In the new year, we are going to be participating in the Entrepreneurial Adventure program,  More information on this program will be sent home in January.

ornament dough recipe

A few students have asked for the recipe for the dough we used to make our handprint ornaments.

Here is the link to the recipe I used: http://www.messylittlemonster.com/2014/12/how-to-make-salt-dough-printable-recipe.html

I baked them at 300 degrees for one hour. They recommend cooking it at 200 for two hours but with 50 hands to bake I sped up the process- and only overcooked a few :)

Merry Christmas!

WHOVILLE MEDLEY

Shoo bi du ah—ba ba shee do ah
Shoo bi du ah—ba ba shee do ah
Shoo bi du ah—ba ba shee do ah

I’ve got the Christmas tree, I’ve got the memories
I’ve got the box of decorations
I’ve got the tinsel strung, the mistletoe’s been hung
I’ve got the means of celebration

I’ve got the lights down low, the skies are dreaming snow
I got the yule log burning bright
And by the Christmas tree I’ve got you here with me
I’ve got the perfect Christmas night

Shoo bi du ah—ba ba shee do ah
Shoo bi du ah—ba ba shee do ah

I got a box of dreams, all with the Christmas theme
But tonight I won’t be sleeping
I’ve got Bing Crosby on, have all my troubles yawn
With the spirit I’ve been keeping

I’ve got the presents wrapped, I’ve got the boxes stacked
I’ve put up those Christmas lights
All around that tree like it all should be
I’ve got the perfect Christmas night

Shoo bi du ah—ba ba shee do ah
Shoo bi du ah—ba ba shee do ah
Shoo bi du ah—ba ba shee do ah
Shoo bi du ah—ba ba shee do

Dream out boys

Aaah—ba ba shee do ah
Aaah—ba ba shee do ah

I’ve got the Christmas tree, I’ve got the memories
I’ve got the box of decorations
I’ve got the tinsel strung, the mistletoe’s been hung
I’ve got the means of celebration

I’ve got the lights down low, the skies are dreaming snow
I got the yule log burning bright
And by the Christmas tree, I’ve got you here with me
I’ve got the perfect Christmas night
And by that Christmas tree, I’ve got you here with me
I’ve got the perfect Christmas night

Shoo bi du ah—ba ba shee do ah
Shoo bi du ah—ba ba shee do ah
Shoo bi du ah—ba ba shee do ah
Shoo bi du ah—ba ba shee do ah

Dance a Thon

Just a reminder that our dance a thon is this Friday November 25th.  Students were given pledge forms last week and are encouraged to ask friends and family members for pledges.  Grade 5's will be in the gym for the dance-a-thon last block Friday.  All money raised from the dance-a-thon will be given to our sister school, St. Luke Ottawa to help support the families during the Christmas season.

Quiz books were sent home to be signed and returned. Please ensure that these are returned to school no later than Thursday.

Math Update

Students wrote their tests on Patterning this past week.  We will begin our unit on Geometry this coming week.  We will be classifying, measuring, and constructing angles and triangles.  We will also be working with and sorting 2D and 3D shapes.

Movie Review Project

Students were introduced to our upcoming movie review project and were asked to think about which movie they would like to review.  We will have two blocks with the chromebooks this Thursday to work on it.  I ask that they watch their movie before Thursday (if they haven't already) so they will be prepared to begin writing about it on Thursday.  All of the written work for this project should be completed at school, however, it may be helpful if they made (handwritten) notes on the major plot events to help them write their summary.

Have a great weekend!
Miss Beardsley

Homework Correction

I apologize for the confusion with the homework this weekend.  I photocopied the grade six version of the math side from last year.  To complete the homework, please make up any six digit numbers for your child to write as a number for #1. They can use those numbers to complete the rest of the page.  Please ignore the examples in the millions. Grade 5's are only assessed up to the hundred thousands.

Multiplication Wall of Fame

When I got home last night and began correcting the students multiplication facts I realized I never mentioned the goal I set for them regarding their multiplication facts.  I have in my room what is called the Multiplication Wall of Fame.  The students are aiming to correctly answer 40 multiplication facts in one minute.  If they do this, their name gets added to the wall and they no longer have to participate in Mad Minutes.  We practice our multiplication facts daily, at the beginning of each Math class.  Students have little booklets and answer as many as they can in one minute.  The goal of 40 is something we are aiming for by the end of the year.  If they are consistently answering at least ten in one minute by the end of this month, they are in a good spot.  If not, please take the time to practice their facts with them.  Knowing their multiplications facts  will help them in almost all areas of math.

Thank you for your support and it was great getting to meet so many of you last night.

Classroom Rights and Responsibilities

I realized too late that the picture of the classroom rights and responsibilities that we made as a class didn't photocopy well. (the black box on the inside of your brochure).  Here is what the students decided on.

Program Night

Dear Grade 5 Parents,

This year I am teaching a Grade 5 class in the morning and kindergarten in the afternoon.  In order to be able to meet as many parnts as possible, I will be making a brief presentation in our Grade 5 class (Room 176) at the beginning of the first two sessions before heading to my kindergarten classroom.  I will also be available in the Grade 5 classroom for questions during the third session.  Mme Campbell will be making her presentation for her Grade 4 parents the second half of the first two sessions. If you cannot make Program Night, I will send copies of handouts home with your child on Friday. I look forward to seeing you Thursday evening.

Saturday 10 September 2016

Welcome

Welcome to our class website.  Please check regularly for classroom announcements, updates, and homework. Please use the links provided for extra practice and important information.

Math and Language Update

I have had such a great first week back at school, and I hope your child has too.  We have already begun our first writing assignment.  We are practicing letter writing, and the students are working on writing a friendly letter to me; introducing themselves, telling me a little about their summer adventures, and setting some academic and personal goals for themselves.  We hope to have our final copies ready to show you on our Program night on September 22nd. This coming week we will begin practicing cursive writing.  We will learn the proper formation of each letter and then continue to develop our cursive writing skills each week while practicing our word wall words.

We will begin our study of Place Value this week.  The Grade five expectation is that students will be able to represent and order numbers to 100 000 and develop the concept of place value to hundredths (0.01). You can help your child at home by verbally quizzing them on numbers to up to 100,000 and having them write the numeral, or by writing large numbers and have them read them aloud.

Our regular homework program will begin Friday September 23, however students will be given a package of cursive writing practice this Friday with the expectation that they practice on their own during the week and return the completed package on Friday September 23rd.
