Literature Circles

We started reading the novel Holes last week and students were given their literature circle folders and weekly tasks were assigned.  This will be in addition to our regular homework which will be handed out tomorrow.  They do however, have the opportunity to use their class time to complete the reading and weekly tasks.  Each day we read for about 20 minutes in the morning, this is a perfect opportunity to work on this task and each Thursday second block will be devoted to sharing their work from the week and working on the next week's assignment. In order for them to receive participation marks for this project, they must bring their completed weekly task to share with the group.  It will remain in the folder until the end of the six weeks.  At that time, I will be collecting the entire folder and marking the assignments included in the folder.  That way, if students miss a week, they will only lose a participation mark but they have the opportunity to complete the task and receive full marks for it.

EAP Charity

We had our final presentations yesterday and the Grade 5's voted to support OK Clean Water project.  We look forward to seeing what ventures they get into to raise money for this great cause.

We will also be having our Data Management quiz this Friday. A review sheet went home last Friday as their homework sheet for the week.  We will be taking it up in class on Friday.

Entrepreneurial Project/Homework this week

Today students were fully introduced to the Entrepreneurial Adventure Program (EAP)  and met with Adrian Lachowski, our financial advisor for this venture from the Bank of Montreal. Over the next few months, our class along with Ms. Arcuri and Miss Hodgins' class will be working together to raise money for a selected charity.  This venture is sure to touch on many aspects of the curriculum while promoting collaboration and giving students an opportunity to make a real difference.  This is my second year participating in this program and I was blown away by what I saw in my student last year. I am excited to once again embark on this journey with the grade 5's at St. Stephen Catholic School.  Instead of the regular homework assignment, I am asking that students choose a charity from the list provided in their language folder in their Google drive or if approved by me, a charity of their choosing and create a Google slides presentation in their group to present next Thursday February 9th. Student will continue to practice their world wall words in class during the week and I will post them on the blog as well. Thank you for your continued support. If you have any questions about the program or anything else, don't hesitate to contact me at the school.
Have a great rest of the week and an even greater weekend!
